Proposal Preparation Overview

Helpful Hints for Proposal Preparation

Understand sponsor’s priorities and evaluation methods

  • Agencies say this information in proposal guidelines is often ignored

Call program officer before preparing proposal for valuable insights on agency profiles.

  • Ask for suggestions to improve your proposal
  • Or is there another program whose priorities are a better match?
  • Organize your proposal using sponsor guidelines and/or evaluation methods
  • Make sure all the required sections are there and in specified order — Label sections the same way sponsor does so reviewers quickly locate the required sections
  • Make note of page limitations, font and margin sizes.

If a proposal is rejected, ask sponsor for the reviewer’s comments. Rewrite the proposal addressing those issues. A resubmitted proposal can be, and often is, funded the second time around
