In our continuing efforts to support research at Notre Dame, this announcement is to share with you that the Office of Research began using Cayuse January 10. The Cayuse system tracks our research proposal and award activity, provides for streamlined-internal routing and approval of proposals, facilitates submission to sponsor systems, and stores proposal and award documents.

As you begin working on your first proposal in the new system, Office of Research staff will be in touch with you to share how to access the system and what steps to take. The Cayuse system will allow you expanded access to your proposal development, submission, and award information through a very simple, user-friendly interface. Our hope is that only minimal training will be needed, and can be provided in a one-on-one, just-in-time format. At a minimum, investigators will need to access Cayuse to answer the compliance questions (research materials and subjects, conflict of interest, intellectual property and export control) and to electronically “sign-off” and certify the proposal prior to route.

The system includes the following Cayuse 424 capabilities:

Extra validations and error checking which means we are doing all we can to ensure proposal will be error free to Grants.gov

System-to-system data transmission for >95% of all Grants.gov opportunities

Well-positioned for implementation of Research.gov (Cayuse working with NSF – anticipating eventual Fastlane retirement)

Budget builder tool includes fringe benefits, F&A rates, inflation rates, and multi-year replication

Customer experience is “…as easy as Fastlane…”

The Cayuse Sponsored Programs (SP) includes the following capabilities:

Proposal development (budget, narrative, compliance questions)

Reuse data and copy proposals and awards

Robust routing and approval

Database of all sponsored program activity

Document repository for proposal and award information

Tracking of proposals and awards to subcontractors

Intuitive User Interface

The National Science Foundation’s entire suite of Award Terms and Conditions has been revised to implement two new requirements, which are either mandated by regulation or legislation. Each set of terms and conditions is accompanied by a comprehensive summary of the changes made to that document.

The revised Terms and Conditions will apply to all new NSF awards and funding amendments to existing NSF awards issued on or after February 1, 2012. In addition to clarifications and other changes made to the conditions, significant changes include:

Travel*, has been updated to incorporate revised circumstances under which use of a foreign-flag air carrier is permissible. The Article provides information on recent modifications to the “Open Skies” Agreement with the European Union, and includes a link to the General Services Administration website for additional information.

Academic Technology Transfer and Commercialization of University Research**, is a new Article which requires higher education institutions that have NSF research support and at least $25,000,000 in total Federal research grants in the most recently completed Federal fiscal year to submit to NSF the URL that contains information on their transfer of technology and commercialization of research results efforts. This change has been mandated by the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act.

What must we change in order to help us bridge the gap between the world as it is and the world as it should be?

In its first year, the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS), inspired by the classical values of beauty, goodness and truth, is transforming the academic landscape through an annual conference, lecture series and fellowships supporting research that extends beyond the analysis of particular problems to the examination of larger—often ethical—ultimate questions.

“The Institute seeks to have a broad, meaningful, and visible impact on the research of the University, the academy, and the world,” says NDIAS director Vittorio Hösle, Paul Kimball Chair of Arts and Letters in the Department of Russian Languages and Literatures.

The NDIAS, established in 2009 as one of the University’s strategic research investment initiatives, supports research related to ultimate questions and questions of value, especially as they engage the Catholic intellectual tradition.

The agenda of NDIAS is open, permitting fellows to pursue outstanding research in all areas. Discourse is shaped by an emphasis on broad questions that link multiple areas of inquiry, allowing scholars to examine questions beyond the narrow boundaries of their discipline. Catholic dedication to the wholeness of knowledge means that no questions are off limits.

NDIAS also offers artists, professionals, scholars and scientists an opportunity to explore the relationship between the descriptive (the world as it is) and the normative (the world as it should be.)

The NDIAS offers two types of fellowships that encompass all disciplines: residential fellowships for faculty and scholars, and graduate student fellowships.

The inaugural class includes eight residential and two graduate fellows from a variety of academic disciplines and countries. They will live and develop as a community of scholars, inviting conversations that are global in scope.

The institute’s first conference, held earlier this year, focused on the nature of beauty. The three-day event brought to campus eminent scholars including Maxim Kantor, acclaimed Russian painter, novelist and essayist, as well as anthropologists, artists, composers, economists, historians and theologians from universities around the world.

“We try to create an engaging relationship with the visiting scholar and students and faculty,” says Hösle. “Maxim’s [Kantor] visit crossed a number of interdisciplinary boundaries; he delivered a series of lectures dealing with political life in Russia, which drew in the German and Russian language departments and fellows from the Nanovic Institute. He also presented a lecture and demonstration at the Snite Museum of Art, and spent a day doing critiques of graduate students’ work in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design.”

Interaction across disciplines and national boundaries is critical to the University’s continued success as a premier international research university, says Hösle.

Plans for the 2011 conference, focused on the nature of goodness, are already underway. Focused on goodness, the conference will address significant questions such as the nature of values, biological factors that have rendered the evolution of moral behavior possible and how engineering can contribute to a better world.

Two forthcoming NDIAS publications will serve as resources for scholars and the public, “The Idea of a Catholic Institute for Advanced Studies,” and a collection of essays presented at the January conference.

This year, the institute will partner with the College of Arts and Letters to offer faculty the opportunity to connect the conferences with the College Seminar (CSEM), a course designed to help second-year students develop engaging thinking, oral and debating skills.

“The institute provides an atmosphere where the most talented graduates and undergraduates develop pleasure in the life of the mind,” says Hösle. “It’s important to stay in touch with students because they inspire you not just with their knowledge, but with their questions.”

The University of Notre Dame Energy Center has joined the Indiana Consortium for Research in Energy Systems and Policy (CRESP). The center joins founding partners Indiana University, Purdue University and Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis in this multidisciplinary organization designed to promote energy focused collaborative investigations and educational opportunities among faculty and researchers at the partner universities.

“We are pleased to commit to membership in CRESP and serve as the coordinator for the efforts of faculty and researchers from across the University and with partner institutions as we tackle the technical, economic and ethical issues related to energy production and its use in the 21st century,” said Joan F. Brennecke, Keating-Crawford Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and director of the Notre Dame Energy Center.

CRESP’s goals include facilitating the formation of multi-institution research teams, securing funding for those teams and conducting research that targets solutions to energy issues. The consortium’s scope encompasses both renewable and fossil energy, specifically focusing on issues relevant to the economies of Midwestern states, particularly Indiana, where about 96 percent of the state’s electricity is generated in facilities fueled by coal. The state also is a large producer of renewable energy resources, such as ethanol and biodiesel from corn and soybeans.

Each university partner offers a different strength for CRESP, from electric vehicles and battery technology to global warming. The Notre Dame Energy Center provides expertise in the development of CO2 separation for cleaner fossil fuel utilization, the safe storage and use of nuclear fuel by-products, and the creation of new solar energy technologies.
