Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

A protocol must be submitted to the Director of Research Compliance at least one week prior to the scheduled meeting. After the protocol has been reviewed, the Director of Research Compliance will notify the PI in writing as to the status of the protocol. Any changes recommended by the IACUC must be incorporated into the protocol and implemented.

Amendments to an approved protocol may be submitted in writing to the Director of Research Compliance. Amendments will be reviewed by the Attending Veterinarian and IACUC chair to determine if the amendment represents a significant change from the approved protocol. If deemed significant, a new protocol must be submitted for full IACUC review. Procedures considered a significant change may include, but are not limited to:

  • Proposal to use an isotope in a living animal.
  • Use of an infectious agent that would require BSL-2 or greater containment.
  • Use of a mutagen or carcinogen.
  • Administration of agents at dosages likely to cause toxicity to animals or humans.
  • Restraint of an unanesthetized animal for longer than 1 hour.
  • Non-survival surgery if none is approved in the original protocol or if surgery will be performed on a species not originally described in the original protocol.
  • Survival surgery even if other survival surgical procedures are approved in the original protocol.
  • Multiple survival surgery.
    Water or food restriction for purposes other than pre-surgical preparation.
  • Electric shock
  • Use of a paralytic on an unanesthetized animal.
  • Induction of more than momentary pain or distress to animals without administration of an appropriate anesthetic or analgesic.
  • Administration of corrosive agents to animals.
  • Acquisition of animals from sources other than commercial vendors of laboratory animals, if the original protocol is approved for such sources.
  • Use of exotic, wild, or unusual animals/species.
  • Use of spontaneous or induced models which might experience significant pain or distress as a result of the condition.
  • Studies in which death is used as an end-point.This list is not necessarily exhaustive; other proposed studies requiring deliberation of the IACUC may also be flagged for full-committee review.
